BNCT has been given first time as primary treatment to a patient with large head and neck cancer, 21.3.2011
The doctors in the Department of Oncology at Helsinki University Central Hospital have administered BNCT followed by chemoradiation as first-line therapy of a patient diagnosed with large, inoperable head and neck carcinoma.
The case report has been recently published on-line in Radiotherapy&Oncology (
www.thegreenjournal.com; search for “Kankaanranta”).
BNCT was given in March 2010 and according to the authors a complete response was achieved in June. There was no evidence of disease in December 2010 when the report was submitted for publication.
The doctors are encouraged by the result and plan to initiate a clinical trial as first-line therapy for selected head and neck cancer patients.
